CPE vs CEU: What Is the Difference?
CPE and CEU both describe continuing education, but they are not always interchangeable. The correct term and conversion rules depend on the profession and licensing body.
CPE Is Common In Accounting
CPA and accounting programs often use CPE language when describing continuing professional education requirements. Providers may list credits by field of study, delivery method, and completion standard.
CEU Is Broader
CEU is common across many education and credentialing contexts. A CEU may use a different time basis than a CPE credit, and a CEU certificate may not automatically satisfy a CPE requirement.
Do Not Assume A Universal Conversion
Some CPE contexts use 50 minutes as one credit hour, but that is not a universal rule for every profession, course, or jurisdiction. If a course is listed in minutes or CEUs, confirm the accepted conversion before recording it.
Convert Minutes Carefully
Use the CPE Hours Calculator with the minutes-per-credit standard that applies to your license or course provider.
